Texas Central Railroad surveys trace to the State of Texas policy of paying railroad builders with public land. Nineteenth-century Texas granted millions of acres to encourage internal improvements, especially railroad construction, and those corporate patents became permanent survey names in county records. The Texas Central was chartered for a line that began near Waco and was later amended for broader north and westward ambitions.
